I came across a wonderful Bugatti Type 35 at the 2023 RetroMobile show in Paris France. Don't know much about the car as it was just sort of "sitting" there, no signs, no people...
I take no credit for the car's attractive and interesting paint job which I present here -but with minor detail and color variations necessary to fit my concept. My immediate reaction to the car (other than the wonder of a Type 35) was the idea that the paint graphics could make it "disappear"... ie: camouflage... and that is exactly what I set out to do in this new work. The concept just stuck in my mind although it did take a while to get it done.
So here it is... an interesting and very different new work.

Located between the Champs-Élysées and the Seine, the Grand Palais is a historic exhibition hall and museum complex located in Paris, France, built for the Universal Exposition of 1900. A key landmark in the city, it features a stunning glass roof.

Designed from the outset as a Bugatti killer, the low slung and aerodynamic bodywork was exceptionally advanced for the era and offered a major aero-advantage over many of Delahaye’s primary rivals. Fitted with a 160bhp 3557cc inline six-cylinder engine the 135 S was exceptionally fast for its day. Among other successes, this car won its class at the 1936 24 Hours of Spa in the hands of its owner-driver Rene Le Begue.

This painting was originally painted in 2022 with a Ferrari. Not great... it was rolled up and set aside. A year later, the first Ferrari was replaced by a second one and again, it didn't work and the painting was almost destroyed. Given the huge amount of detail work in the background, it was again rolled and waited for its current... and definitely... final version.

This wonderful 100 year old car won the "Tom Thomson Art Gallery Timeless Design" award at the 2024 Cobble Beach Concours. The award is named after the celebrated Canadian artist Tom Thomson (1877-1917). Thomson's work is unique and has a readily identifiable style. The award got me thinking: what if Thomson had lived to see the Rolls and decided to create a work based on this beautiful car. To be clear, Thomson's works consist almost entirely of landscapes, depicting trees, skies, lakes, and rivers based on north central locations in Ontario. His painting style is completely different than mine and I could only hope for and strive to attain his talent... but... here's my attempt.

This new original work features a classic 1940 19' Chris Craft Barrelback Runabout in a somewhat exciting moment. The steamship passengers watch on with great interest to see what route she will take...

The setting is the Gravenhurst Ontario harbor with one of its iconic steamships... the 130 year old historic steamship R.M.S. Segwun. Built in 1887, Segwun is North America's oldest operating steamship and was originally designated a Royal Mail Ship.

This painting was originally scheduled to premiere at the ACBS boat show in Gravenhurst in early July 2024. The premiere has been pushed forward to 2025.
